PRO TALK: Blockchain for Self-Sovereign Identity
In today’s digital landscape, we don’t own our digital identities. We might be able to control what information we put online, and manage how it’s used to a degree, but once we give that data to Facebook, Google, or Microsoft, they own it. The emerging technology of blockchain has the potential to change that with the concept of self-sovereign identity (SSID). With SSID, individuals could maintain control over their digital identities, as well as how it is used and where it is stored. This would benefit businesses and consumers alike, simplifying efforts like KYC that cost financial institutions millions of dollars a year, and preventing data theft or misuse like the current Facebook/Cambridge Analytica fiasco. Blockchain is a widely discussed topic under self-sovereign identity. There are many ongoing initiatives including the Sovrin Foundation, W3C Credentials Community Group, Decentralized IDentifiers (DIDs) to build identity on blockchain. This talk explores the evolution of identity management in the era of blockchain.

PRO TALK: Exploring Blockchains Without Cryptocurrencies
The uses for blockchain technologies go beyond cryptocurrency. Any business network that records transactions and can’t depend on a central proxy that everyone must trust, and for which those ledgers must be immutable, can be remade through blockchain technologies. Distributed ledgers for different use cases can have vastly different requirements. Hyperledger embraces the full spectrum of industry use cases, especially enterprise scenarios with widely varied requirements for decentralization, trust, continuity and confirmation times. Each represents a potentially unique optimization point for the technology. Daniela will discuss blockchains being built that do not involve cryptocurrency from companies in various industries including healthcare, education and supply chain to name a few.

PRO TALK: Re-engineering Enterprise and Consumer Identity Management Using The Blockchain
Identity holds the key to delivering the convenient access that users demand, and securing critical data and infrastructure. However, given recent technological advancements and new methods on the horizon, identity is positioned to undergo a seismic shift within enterprises. Identity Management on the Blockchain empowers individuals, businesses and governments to establish, verify and exchange identity information simply, privately, securely and at world scale. Identity holds the key to delivering the convenient access that users demand, and securing critical data and infrastructure. However, given recent technological advancements and new methods on the horizon, identity is positioned to undergo a seismic shift within enterprises. Blockchain allows the ability to change the entire nature of digital identity management. Instead of being held by a company, the user could use the blockchain to maintain ownership and control over their own identity. As authoritative third parties certified they know an individual, they could share that information to create a web of trust. Future entities can verify an individual with confidence based on earlier efforts. How will distributed identity coexist with the notion of enterprise-owned assets? How will enterprise security need to adapt to new use cases? What are some practical strategies for transformation? how recent do changes in data management, security and authentication effect all type of enterprises? Why could blockchain play an important role in identity management Educate the audience on Blockchain &how it can help shift the identity landscape Share Best Practices & Pitfalls to using Blockchain for Identity Management? PRO TALK: Changing FinTech with Smart Contracts
The introduction of blockchain technology and smart contracts to the world of traditional finance has opened people's eyes to the countless inefficiencies and frustrations of traditional banking and financial systems. The current mechanisms and protocols of the financial world are cumbersome, expensive, and create an unnecessarily high barrier of entry for access. Smart contracts and tokenization allow entities to unlock new liquidity in traditionally illiquid assets. This means that asset holders can now leverage new capital that the financial systems of hold forbid. The only obstacle left is developing the right infrastructure and protocols for facilitating these markets and transactions.

PRO TALK: A Blockchain Paradigm for High Security Enterprise Software
Enterprise software has gone through seismic shifts over the past 15 years, both in the move from monolithic applications to line of business apps, as well as the migration to the cloud, then the private cloud. In that time, enterprises requiring the highest levels of security have been constantly faced with competing tensions, to both reduce costs and move to the cloud, while maintaining increasingly important high security postures. In this talk, Pat White will introduce a new enterprise application paradigm built on distributed databases and peer to peer architectures to enable incredibly robust, and secure, deployment architectures. By relying more heavily on P2P principals, enterprises can deploy software in exactly the security configuration they're most comfortable with, perhaps hosting portions of the architecture in the cloud, parts in a private cloud, parts in hosted data centers, and finally pieces entirely on client and encrypted. He will share code samples, architectural designs, technical decision making concerns, and other insights on how to build the next generation of enterprise software.

CANCELLED: Beyond Blockchain: What Distributed Applications Will Look Like in 10 years From Now
Making a blockchain from scratch is no simple task. In fact, Bitcoin, Litecoin, ZCash, and Dash all share 90% of the same code for this very reason. We’re looking to show people how easy it is to develop and create new custom blockchains and apps. We’re looking to show the full power of Lamden. Lamden is focused at being the first end-to-end development suite for blockchain applications. We do not focus specifically on smart contracts on a pre-existing system, but rather creating new and custom blockchains and decentralized systems that are not encompassed within the application space of smart contracts. Those who know a thing or two about smart contracts know that there is a limited subset of what they can do. The tools that Lamden is making supersede that subset and expose a development environment wherein any type of decentralized application can be developed. Lamden is an open source Python based blockchain network and development suite. Our blockchain was written entirely in Python and will be released, for free, to the Python community near the end of the year. Developers may be interested in why Lamden chose Python, what challenges the team has faced so far, what Lamden's tool-set will enable them to do and maybe how they can get involved. Lamden's goal is to put easy to use blockchain tools in the hands of Python developers.

KENOTE: How Decentralized Apps Can Go Mainstream: Tokenization & The End of Extraction
New products, platforms and protocols break into the consumer mainstream when the average user engages based on the benefit of the service (i.e. faster, cheaper, better) without being forced to care about the enabling technology. To date, the users of decentralized blockchain applications have been primarily those with a pre-existing interest in the space. Some companies, like Public Market, are changing this. What’s more, tokenization is breeding unprecedented network effects for tokenized applications. Mainstream decentralized apps can provide all the benefits of network effects without the costs to the network participants that are unavoidable under private, centralized and rent-seeking network ownership. Importantly, these cost savings for users can be more than financial: they can also come in the form of increased privacy, ownership of data, and more favorable network policies.

OPEN TALK : Augmented Reality, Alexa and Blockchain - Made For Each Other
AR has allowed everyday objects to come to life digitally. Alexa has now enabled countless devices to interact through voice commands. These technologies greatly enhance the end user experience. Blockchain promises to allow any asset to be tracked across it’s lifecycle in a secured distributed way. However, the confluence of these three technologies leads to powerful capabilities which can greatly enhance existing business processes for enterprises. For ex: An application could use Alexa to receive voice commands to interact with an AR object and the change of state of the AR objects could be stored in a Blockchain. This allows traceability of the AR object states, Alexa commands and the overall interaction. This session will aim to walk the user through few examples leveraging Blockchain and the pitfalls to look out for along the way.

PRO TALK: Navigating Passwordless Authentication with FIDO2 and WebAuthn
With an estimated 90 percent of remote hacking focused on cryptocurrency theft, cryptocurrency assets must be protected with the highest levels of assurance. For decades, the password has been the global standard of authentication, but it’s a common understanding that the password experience is frustrating, not secure, and difficult to effectively maintain. Furthermore, SMS and authentication apps have been shown to be vulnerable to advanced phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks. From every angle it’s clear that securing end user account access is an age-old pain point, but now, there is an open authentication standard that can finally solve this problem for cryptocurrency companies at scale: FIDO2 and WebAuthn. Join this session to learn about this new standard and how organizations, from cryptocurrency, technology, to consumer focused, can protect their end users with strong hardware based authentication. Based on public key cryptography, FIDO2 upholds security and privacy tenets similar to blockchain by moving authentication away from a centralized point of control (passwords stored on servers). FIDO2 provides strong user authentication as a first factor, eliminating the need for cumbersome passwords. If necessary or desired, FIDO2 can also be conveniently paired with PINs, biometrics, or gestures as additional authentication factors. As a core creator of the FIDO2 standard, Yubico’s session will primarily focus on education and guidance for the larger blockchain community. Attendees can expect to review the technical specifications of the FIDO2 Web Authentication API (WebAuthn) and Client to Authenticator Protocol (CTAP); explore implementation guides, reference code and SDKs; and discuss industry-wide use cases, particularly within the cryptocurrency markets.

PRO TALK: Source Code Management on Blockchain
First born in 2008, blockchain’s claim to fame comes from its role as the underpinning technology for Bitcoin, but it has evolved to be used for much more than cryptocurrencies. While it is many things, it is a decentralized, independently verifiable, and immutable ledger at its core. When transactions are recorded on the ledger, every member of the network is updated. The decentralized nature of this ledger ensures that these transactions and the information they carry are tamper-proof. Thanks to blockchain’s use of merkle trees, it is very easy for the network to verify the validity of each transaction. There are over 22 million software developers in the world writing more than 600 billion lines of code each year. The amount of developers is growing over 20% year over year. A single modern sports car has the same amount of code as two Facebook’s. Developers and their code shape the world we live in. Source Code Management underpins the world software development apparatus. Git is the most popular and widely used version control technology today. What if those two worlds collided? Could you take the amazing innovations of the blockchain technology and apply them to the Git world to create a decentralized infrastructure for global developers with full autonomy, no single point of failure and immutable security and record keeping?

PRO TALK: Future Proofing Token Economics With Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Simulation
Risk and behavioral analysis techniques used by traditional finance also apply, now even more so, to autonomous blockchain markets and their token economics. Markov Chains are used to create Bayesian probability models essential to financial systems. When combined with Monte Carlo simulation, model variable samplings using different distributions show all the possibilities of market behavior. By sampling all combinations of changes to model variables, system faults leading to market failures can be detected and eliminated. These models and simulators also serve as a comprehensive test harnesses for complex smart contract based economic systems. These tools are integral to future proofing the token economic model of autonomous blockchain markets before flipping the switch and hoping for the best. Tools, and mechanisms for simulating and verification testing token economies will be covered. Subutai’s Bayesian model MCMC simulation for its dual token structure based economy with an autonomous market maker and systemically important payment system (SIPS) that manages its currency reserves will be demonstrated. At the end of this talk, you will have access to free open source tools to rapidly start future proofing your own token economic model in a live network.

PRO TALK: How Cryptocurrency is Changing Cyber Security
The birth of cryptocurrency has changed the threat landscape making it easier for malicious actors to get paid and remain anonymous. The days of ransomware payments being paid in cryptocurrency are not over, but the more ominous threats facing us now are cryptojacking, botnets turned miners, and crypto phishing. With the rocketing cryptocurrency market cap soaring up to $835 billion in early January the name of the game is computing power and it is only going to get worse as cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream. The cryptocurrency market is volatile, where daily 30% swings are not uncommon. This is a double-edged sword for malicious actors. Payouts could drastically increase or decrease in value over the course of months, weeks, or even days. This can enable malicious actors to purchase extra hosting infrastructure, buy additional malware programs on the dark web, buy a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, or even walk away penniless if the market doesn’t move in their favor. The potential for 2x, 5x, or even 100x returns on the cryptocurrency obtained from exploiting your environment is entirely within possibility. Join me for a dive into the crypto cyber security space, steps you should take to protect your environment, and how security researchers combat malicious actors using crypto to fund their activities.

CANCELLED: Blockchain: Parts Unknown
Digital world has produced efficiencies, new innovative products, and close customer relationships globally by the effective use of mobile, IoT (Internet of Things), social media, analytics and cloud technology to generate models for better decisions. Blockchain is recently introduced and revolutionizing the digital world bringing a new perspective to security, resiliency and efficiency of systems. While initially popularized by Bitcoin, Blockchain is much more than a foundation for crypto currency. It offers a secure way to exchange any kind of good, service, or transaction. Industrial growth increasingly depends on trusted partnerships; but increasing regulation, cybercrime and fraud are inhibiting expansion. To address these challenges, Blockchain will enable more agile value chains, faster product innovations, closer customer relationships, and quicker integration with the IoT and cloud technology. Further Blockchain provides a lower cost of trade with a trusted contract monitored without intervention from third parties who may not add direct value. It facilitates smart contracts, engagements, and agreements with inherent, robust cyber security features. This paper is an effort to break the ground for presenting and demonstrating the use of Blockchain technology in multiple industrial applications. A healthcare industry application, Healthchain, is formalized and developed on the foundation of Blockchain. The concepts are transferable to a wide range of industries as finance, government and manufacturing where security, scalability and efficiency must meet.

To create "smarter search" in today's search engines, we need to understand a) what our users are looking for, b) what kinds of questions they've generally been interested in the past, c) what previous attempts to satisfy this search question have been, d) what others have been feeling were successful answers to this (and related) questions.  These questions are difficult in general, but with our user's collective behavior to guide us, an "80% solution" can be achieved by doing that most effective "machine learning model": counting.  The next 80% relevance gain can be found in a combination of collaborative filtering recommender systems wired through your search engine, and simple supervised machine learning for query intent classification.  If you really need to get the remaining 80% of relevance gains left, you'll need to roll up your sleeves and do some NLP or knowledge graph mining, but first let's see if you even need to get that far.

CANCELLED: BlockChains for Distributed Security of Smart Grids
Scada systems in power grids are centralized and represent a single point of failure and vulnerability. The Distributed Ledger in BlockChains and the use of smart contracts with guaranteed execution provides a clean slate approach to a parallel reliability system with multiple nodes and miners. This concept and implementation makes for a harder target to penetrate and hack compared to current Scada systems. As a private P2P network transaction times are in microseconds and an Ethereum based system can also have EWatts as a "currency". A prototype Smart grid of this system is built with Raspberry Pi3Bs as nodes and laptops as miners. Energy harvesting nodes supply EWatts to the Storage nodes which then source EWatts to users.

PRO TALK: Blockchain-driven Data Marketplaces: A Reference Architecture
Data Marketplaces are gaining significance. With the abundance of enterprise data everywhere, the notion of data monetization is on every enterprise’s mind. One enterprise’s data is another enterprise’s analytics goldmine. With the advent of IoT, our enterprises are part of connected ecosystems. As participants of the same partner ecosystem, enterprises belonging to an industry are keen on sharing data with each other or at least try to monetize on that, where possible. However, with everyone’s astute focus on compliance regulations like GDPR, data sharing is not easy. And, therein come Blockchains with the promise of complete data auditability and governance. This session will showcase the key challenges and a reference architecture.

PRO TALK: Digitizing the Supply Chain Via Blockchain
Each year, $25 trillion in business transactions take place in the global supply chain, but because of supply-chain inefficiencies--including overstocks, out-of-stocks, supply-chain interruptions, and lost sales opportunities--nearly $4.7 trillion of this spending is effectively wasted, imposing an enormous burden on buyers and sellers alike. One reason for these high, needless costs and lost revenue is the fact that only 27% of global B2B transactions are digitized. This session will demonstrate that, by using blockchain and smart contracts, global supply chains can be made much more efficient, not only eliminating unnecessary costs, but providing significant monetary benefits to both buyers and sellers in all parts of the world.

PRO TALK:How to Avoid a ostly Crypto Mistake and Save $100 Million
Following the Great Recession in 2008, people began searching for alternative means of financial transactions removed from the third-party middlemen they felt they could no longer trust. Then came Bitcoin: the decentralized currency that took personal information out of the hands of bank behemoths and back into the hands of their rightful owners. Initially a concept in Satoshi Naokomoto’s 2008 whitpaper, Bitcoin has since become a major part of the cultural landscape, starting a cryptocurrency revolution. There are now over 1500 altcoins, and that number is continuing to grow all the time. Furthermore, the blockchain technology that powers Bitcoin is transforming the way enterprises process business transactions in industries as varied as legal services, health care, and real estate. In my presentation, I will discuss why I believe Bitcoin and other digital currencies will grow even more influential in the modern-day financial landscape, as well as how they will continue to demonstrate their value as the peoples’ currency.

OPEN TALK: Managing Identity on the Blockchain
Factom has identity management built into the core of the blockchain code allowing users to define cryptographic identities for people, documents, resources and nearly anything else. Managing identity on the Blockchain creates identities with a verifiable history; every change to the identity is permanently written to the Blockchain creating an audit trail. What’s more, hierarchical identity keys allow for easy management of identities in the real world as when low level keys are compromised externally or rotated due to internal processes, the keys can be revoked and replaced with higher level keys. Paul Snow will walk attendees through identity management on a blockchain and the many key use cases it facilitates.

PRO TALK: Inverting the Client Server Paradigm with Blockchain-Secured Edge IoT Gateways
Currently the mindset of the IoT world is that devices are clients to a powerful central server. This is not going to work going forward with billions of potentially insecure devices with our personal information communicating over long distances to servers in the cloud. Hopefully the general public will wake up and demand that they own their data, and will be provided with unbrickable future-proofed IoT products. If that happens the end-user will need to be protected with end-to-end encryption, in-house security products to protect the “lesser” devices and will need the ability to source services from independent providers for their needs (security, storage, etc). This will make the service providers in the cloud clients of our devices on the IoT Edge. The whole client-server paradigm will be inverted, central cloud clients communicating with IoT Edge servers. The inversion quickening has already begun! The unbrickable, free open and modular hardware platform, the Subutai Blockchain Router v2.0 went into production in April of 2018 to specifically lead the inversion. It is the Swiss Army Knife of IoT Gateways. The router has an Arduino Shield header, a Raspberry Pi Hat, and 4-PMOD connectors to interoperate with shields offered for these ecosystems. Thousands of sensors, actuators, controllers, and peripheral buses interoperate with the Subutai Blockchain Router. The router is acts both as an IoT Gateway and a hardware accelerated cloud router. It’s essentially a Subutai appliance with custom circuitry inside programmable logic that also supports an advanced hardware security framework for industrial IoT. The device’s FPGA can also contain a soft core for the Ethereum Virtual Machine to rapidly execute EVM instructions. It is designed to integrate itself and the devices it connects on the edge securely into the blockchain. In this session we will introduce users to the Subutai Blockchain Router and how to create IoT-enabled edge using the Subutai Platform.

OPEN TALK: A Global, Distributed Identity and Trust Management System Using Distributed Ledgers
Much of the Internet is built on use of digital certificates to provide trusted assertions. Digital certificates have many limitations that can now be overcome using distributed ledgers and other components. While many applications of blockchains have unproven value or can be implemented more efficiently without them, we demonstrate that blockchains and other forms of distributed ledgers can be used to construct a global system that solves many of the current problems in identity and trust management systems. This system allows us to establish identity and trust management systems that can gracefully scale to include the Internet of Everything. The talk will discuss many of the limitations of current certificate authorities such as: · Scale: Current CAs are hierarchical, so the production of trusted assertions is limited by the inability of CAs to efficiently organize means for trusting assertions from authorities that naturally need to cover billions of diverse topics from billions of authoritative sources that interact in non-hierarchical ways. · Perfect Forward Integrity: Certificate base systems rely on the security of signing keys. When a signing key is compromised, all certificates signed with the key both in the future as well as the past, lose verifiable authenticity. Worse, all assertions made in the past with keys downstream in a certificate chain are compromised. This exacerbates and is exacerbated by the scaling issue described above. A system with perfect forward integrity is needed whereby assertions are still valid and authenticatable as long as we know they were made before the key was compromised. · Revocation and renewability: After decades of deployment of Certificate Management systems, revocation and renewability remain difficult and unscalable even for homogeneous applications. Identity management for entities whose attributes can change often requires new thinking and systems. · Impending collapse from Quantum Computation: All certificate schemes that are in practice today are vulnerable to QC attacks that can someday render all digital certificates past, present and future useless. The proposed distributed ledger-based system will include the following features: · A heterogenous system of distributed ledgers with common interfaces can become a universal recording mechanism for all types of trusted assertions about "rich identities" for all kinds of entities. · This heterogeneous system can evolve to naturally and securely support assertions from the "natural" authorities able to cover diverse attributes about diverse entities. This system will scale as more entities need to rely on one another in an Internet of Everything. · We introduce the concept of "trusted derivatives" of distributed ledgers that can be used to efficiently make trusted assertions available to individual entities and applications optimized for their needs. · While the virtuous immutability and auditability of distributed ledgers can make revocation and renewability challenging, we can use these trusted derivatives to provide the latest trusted assertions, including any changes and revocations, available in highly efficient ways. Under this system, users of trusted information can be guaranteed the latest information provided at low latency and high reliability. Costs of the system can be scaled according to the level of assurance required. · A few simple, optimizable components can be designed to provide a highly reliable, adaptive, scalable system that efficiently transfers information from trusted assertion producers with recognized authority on specific topics to trusted assertion consumers who will use that information according to their specific applications and their own personalized policies. · The architecture allows for the use of many different types and formats of trusted assertions. This architecture will support notions of "incremental trust", blind authorization, anonymity, and confidentiality. · The system is designed to significantly reduce vulnerability to quantum computing attacks.

KEYNOTE: User Experience on the Blockchain
Today, blockchain is a “hot topic” and not widely understood. Generally, there are two types of people in the blockchain space, the spectators, who think it is a fad or a “get rich quick” plan and the people who are more invested in the long-term potential of blockchain in our society.

When the internet was introduced no one quite understood it at first, and now we cannot imagine a world without it. Similarly, blockchain is discussed in everyday life, but no one quite understands how big of an impact it can and will have in the not-so-distant future. Adoption of blockchain will be tricky, and like all new technologies, users will need to feel like they can trust it and not fear it. Therefore, it is crucial that the user experience and design are heavily evaluated, and products must be crafted with the needs and want of the user in mind or else there will never be as great of a user adoption as needed. A more human-centered blockchain design can help attract and attain users.

Ultimately, the widespread adoption of blockchain will not be because the technology is not there, it will be because the design does not match the technology and people will be fearful. We need to remove that fear and instill acceptance and creating a great user experience is the answer
